Scottsdale Unified School Update

Please see below information about anti-police, anti-American history curriculum being proposed for board adoption. We need parents/community members to email the governing board and/or attend the May 13th meeting and make a public comment.

Woke American History Curriculum Recommended for Board Approval

A committee comprised almost exclusively of Scottsdale Unified staff has recommended that the Governing Board spend $145,000 on American history curriculum that promotes highly political opinions as fact.

The textbook, published by Savvas, contains lessons on Black Lives Matter, January 6th, climate change, LGBTQ+ rights, illegal immigration, police brutality and more.

In 2020, Savvas launched a Culturally Responsive Learning initiative to “build on the national movement for social justice.” Savvas’s supplemental materials Listenwise and Hook & Inspire have previously come under scrutiny at SUSD for their problematic lessons. For example, Listenwise offers stories such as “Adopted by a White Mom,” promotes affirmation for gender-confused children and endorses universal basic income.

The SUSD Social Sciences Committee’s recommendation of Savvas curriculum follows Superintendent Menzel’s commitment to the U.S. Department of Education that “no illegal D.E.I. programs or practice” exist at Scottdale Unified.

The Governing Board will make a final decision on the Savvas curriculum at the May 13, 2025, board meeting.

Below: Students are taught at Black Lives Matters protests were “generally peaceful.”

Below: Savvas champions climate action and asks students to compare similarities of the Civil Rights Movement and the Black Lives Matter movement.

Below: Savvas’ online textbook has a lesson that focuses on social justice and “systemic racism.”

Below: Hook & Inspire includes videos on “civil resistance” and asks students where people could turn if they live in an “authoritarian system.”

Below: In a lesson on “systemic racial injustices”, Hook & Inspire includes a “counterpoint” lesson that questions BLM’s actions yet supports its mission. The article quotes a “noted theologian and lecturer on queer theology” who says: “The BLM also gives special “attention to the needs of black queers, the black transgendered, the black undocumented, black incarcerated and others who are hardly a speck on today’s political agenda.””

Savvas also promotes Campaign Zero, a movement that aims to “shrink the reliance and power of police.”

Below: The recommended history curriculum is available for public review until May 13th. Below are comments from community members who have already reviewed the Savvas textbook. The Social Sciences Committee reviewed all comments prior to making their recommendation to the board.

“This is exactly what parents do not want for their children and is why they are moving out of the public school. If you care about maintaining or increasing enrollment, this will not help!”
